Udawalawe: The Gathering of Giants

Udawalawe National Park is arguably the best place in Asia to witness wild elephants in their natural habitat. Spanning over 30,000 hectares of dry-zone grasslands and scrub forest, the park was created to provide a sanctuary for wildlife displaced by the construction of the massive Udawalawe Reservoir. Unlike other parks where wildlife can be elusive, Udawalawe offers almost guaranteed sightings of its 600-plus resident elephants, who roam the open plains in family herds, bathe in the shimmering lagoons, and graze beneath the shadow of the central highlands.

The landscape of Udawalawe is reminiscent of an African savanna, with vast, open vistas that make wildlife spotting exceptionally rewarding. As you traverse the park in a 4WD jeep, you’ll encounter more than just "gentle giants." The park is a haven for water buffalo, monitor lizards, crocodiles, and the occasional, elusive leopard. For bird enthusiasts, the reservoir and wetlands serve as a vital pit stop for migratory species, where majestic white-bellied sea eagles soar above while painted storks and pelicans decorate the shoreline.

A visit to Udawalawe is incomplete without experiencing the Elephant Transit Home (ETH). Located just outside the park, this ethical rehabilitation center cares for orphaned elephant calves with the sole goal of releasing them back into the wild. Watching the "milk feeding" sessions from a distance is a heart-warming experience that highlights Sri Lanka’s deep-rooted commitment to conservation. Whether you are watching a matriarch lead her herd across the road or observing the playful antics of a rescued calf, Udawalawe offers an intimate and ethical window into the wild heart of the island.
